Westchester County is extending the summer season for the Playland Amusement Park and two of the county's public pools. The county this season has been managing the amusement park following Standard Amusements having submitted notice to the county that it was terminating its contract to manage the park and that the county had defaulted on the contract. The county denied a default and the legal dispute between the county and Standard remains unresolved.
Not all of the rides at Playland were able to be opened for the current season due to needed maintenance and repairs that could not be accomplished after the county took over the park's management for the current season from Standard. Fifteen rides for children in Kiddyland have been open, while the park's major rides that have been operating include Music Express, Old Rye Motorbike Factory, Crazy Mouse, Grand Carousel, Family Flyer, The Whip, Dragonator, Kite Flyer, Zombie Castle, House of Mirrors and Bumper Cars, Jack the Puppeteer, and Catch a Wave.
The county will be keeping the amusement park open for two additional weekends of rides, games, and family entertainment on Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 6, 7, 13 and 14, with park hours from 12 noon to 7 p.m. each day.
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said, "Playland is a destination that brings joy to people of all ages, and by extending park hours, we're making sure residents and visitors alike can squeeze in every last bit of fun before the season ends. It's an opportunity for everyone to enjoy more time in the park and celebrate the end of summer together."
The county said that in addition to rides, there will be strolling entertainment, meet-and-greets by the park's mascot Coaster the Dragon and refreshments available for purchase from food trucks and stands. The fee for parking is $10 and admission to the park is free with a $15 charge for a wristband allowing all-day use of the rides.
At the same time, the county plans to keep the Saxon Woods Pool in White Plains and Sprain Ridge Pool in Yonkers open for the same two weekends as Playland. The pools will be open from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day. Proof of county residency is required and there are admission fees.
Westchester County Parks Commissioner, Kathy O'Connor said, "We are grateful to our staff and lifeguards for going the extra mile this September to keep the fun going and ensure a safe, enjoyable experience for everyone."
